RE-PUBLISH: My Natural Living Skin Care Regimen

Hello and welcome to all the new Earthly Bodies that have joined the community in the last week! As promised on last week’s periscope here is my all natural skin care regimen featuring honey and jojoba oil with a video tutorial.

Taking care of our skin is usually at the top of everyone’s list no matter who you are! It’s the first impression we give off whether we want to or not.

So now I’ve used this regimen for almost 3 years and there will probably never be another one for me. Enjoy the tutorial and the information below about what I use and why. FYI: You can also view this tutorial directly from my YouTube-ish channel @EarthlyBodies. Just search honey when you get there.

 

 

Face towel – Make sure you are using a set of face towels purchased to ONLY touch YOUR face. Even wash them separate from all the other towels. If you wear makeup remove it first with Almond oil on cotton balls/pads…slides right off and with none of the irritation a lot of  makeup removers out there will give.  Get your water as warm as you can stand it and soak the towel in it wringing it out several times to really get the heat in there. Then place the towel over your face and just enjoy the relaxing steam until it cools down. The warm steam allows your pores to open making it easy to wipe away the days oil and debris. Once it cools down wipe your face and soak the towel again this time using the opposite side. Depending on how much time you have repeat this as many times as you want, but always doing it at least twice. Soak the towel once again and hang it to the side for a later step.

Now for the secret skin care weapon….

Honey –   Yep! The same one you use in your morning cup of  tea or your cookie and cake recipes. Honey is one of natures most amazing gifts. It’s benefits range from being an unbelievable skin moisturizer to an antiseptic that holds vitamins C and B. What I LOVE most is that honey has humectant qualities meaning it not only attracts water, but also retains it in the skin! So your skin will remain hydrated as the humectants seek moisture from the air keeping your skin supple and fighting dryness and wrinkles. I choose to use 100% raw organic honey, but I have read and seen results from people who use all different kinds including the one we all recognize in the cute little bear container. But the way my skin is set up though…I’m not gonna leave anything to chance! I have a separate jar that is only used for skin care. Please make sure your hands are clean before dipping out your honey. Not doing so could transfer bacteria into your cleanser and right onto your face…epic fail. This is your moisturizing cleanser! After your towel steam dip a small dime size amount into your hand and rub it onto your face just as you would any other cleanser. You may need to dampen your hand just a little to assist the honey in smoothing across your face. How long you let it sit on your face depends on how much time you have or what your skin is telling you it needs. For me if my skin seems to be in need of moisture (this is more so in the colder months) or I just have more time I will leave the honey on my skin like a mask for 5-20 minutes and have been known to let it sit all day if I’m just hanging around the house.  Grab your towel that you steamed with earlier that has cooled down at this point and pat your face dry (the cool water causes your pores to close keeping in all the moisture). You will be left with clean, dewy and soft skin.

Jojoba oil – If you’re concerned you’ll need additional moisture this is hands down one of the best oils anyone can use on their skin! Jojoba oil has properties that make it closest to our skins natural oil produced which is sebum. We all have it some of us just produce more than others. Like magic Jojoba oil regulates the amount of sebum produced when used regularly (YaaaaY for oily skin individuals). This is an excellent moisturizer. I no longer have to use it now that my skin has been regulated. After patting your skin dry with your cool towel put a dime sized amount in your hands, rub them together and apply just like you would any other moisturizer. A little goes a long way so since your entire body will enjoy the recognizable properties if you squeeze/pour out too much just move on down to your neck, chest, etc.

That’s it! Now your skin has an amazing palette to apply your make up or just head out the door looking all easy breezy beautiful (^_^). Try this for 30 days and come back here to tell us what you think. Be sure to take a before and after pic so that you truly see the results. I know that your skin will love it just like mine does. 5 benefits of doing handstands

When my handstand journey began I was solely motivated by gaining strength, but there are so many other benefits to incorporating the falsely feared handstand into your daily routine. This is an extremely underrated exercise mainly because most people think they just can’t do them when in fact this is one of those miracle exercises that everyone can build themselves in regardless of weight or size AND you d0n’t have to be a gymnastics prodigy or yoga phenom to start enjoying the benefits today.

Doing these daily can benefit your health and give you a daily dose of joy you probably haven’t remembered since being a kid.

Start out doing them against a wall or with your bestie like I did if you can’t do a freestanding one right off the bat. Either way here are five reasons why you should do handstands every day:

1.They can boost your mood.

Yes, handstands can also make you feel happier, since the blood flow to your brain has an energizing and calming effect, especially when you’re feeling really stressed out.

Another way handstands can help your mood is by reducing the production of the stress hormone, cortisol, which can not only de-stress you in the short-term but could also help relieve minor depression and anxiety.

2.They build core strength.

This is great news…there’s no need to spend hours focusing just on your abs — you can have fun doing handstands and build core strength as well.

Since staying upside down forces you to stabilize your muscles, you’re constantly working your abs, as well as other key muscle groups such as your hip flexors, hamstrings, inner thigh muscles, obliques and lower back while in a handstand. Training handstands every day will get you a well balanced, super strong core.

3.They’ll make your upper body super strong.

In order to stay upside down for any length of time, you’ll need a massive amount of shoulder, arm, and upper back strength. In fact, it’s not uncommon for beginners to start shaking after just a few seconds of holding a handstand.

To build up strength, start by holding a handstand against a wall for three sets of 5-10 seconds. Work up to holding them for a minute or two at a time. Practice often, and watch as your upper body strength skyrockets.

4.They’ll increase your balance

If you’ve ever tried a handstand, you know that besides needing to be strong to do them, you’ll also need to have substantial balancing skills as well in order to be able to hold yourself up. Freestanding handstands, especially, require you to be able to have full control over your muscles and to constantly make small adjustments to avoid falling.

Practicing freestanding handstands or doing handstands against a wall and trying to take your feet off the wall for as long as possible will help increase your balancing abilities like no other exercise can.

5.They help with bone health, circulation and breathing.

Since handstands are technically a weight-bearing exercise, they can help strengthen your bones, making you less prone to osteoporosis. Handstands are also beneficial for your spine, and help aid bone health in your shoulders, arms and wrists.

Not only that, the upside-down nature of a handstand can increase circulation to your upper body, while relieving pressure on your feet and legs and stretching your diaphragm at the same time, which in turn can increase blood flow to your lungs.

So start building handstands into your daily routine, even if it’s just a few a day. You’ll not only be benefiting your health; you’ll have a blast while doing it!

Banana Peanut Butter Vice Cream!

Hiiii Earthly Bodies! I’ve missed you! I’ve been being trained and poured into immensely the last two weeks and I’m so thankful that it has brought new life to the mission I have brought to you – Helping you make your body a safe place to LIVE!. So as a peace-offering I come bearing dessert!

Vice cream has become one of my favorite (not at all) guilty pleasures. Why do I call it vice cream? Because it’s vegan! For this recipe you’ll only need TWO ingredients, but what I love is that the combinations and toppings can be endless.

Banana Peanut Butter Vice Cream

What you’ll need:

4  very ripe bananas (the riper the sweeter your vice cream and the spotted bananas contain TNF, which has the ability to combat abnormal cells.) Healthy cancer fighting “ice cream”? Yes please!
2 tablespoons peanut butter (Use your favorite PB, but I recommend Justin’s All Natural PB with Honey #nomnomnom)

How To Create a Bowl of  Yummm:

  • How much time do you have? 1. If you want this treat sooner than later peel bananas and slice them into 1/2 inch discs. Arrange banana slices in a single layer on a large plate or baking sheet. Freeze for 1-2 hours. Once frozen they will stick to the plate so use a spatula to remove frozen discs. It’s going in the blender so it’s okay if they break during this process. 2. If you don’t want to deal with the fight caused from the frozen sliced bananas on the plate just peel bananas and place them whole in a Ziploc bag for at least 3 hours and then slice them after frozen with a sharp knife. I prefer this method because I don’t have an attitude while eating my vice cream ;).
  • Place the banana slices in a powerful blender or food processor. Blend banana slices and use a spoon as needed to scrape down the sides. The bananas will look like crumbs at first…keep blending until the mixture is creamy and smooth. If it is not becoming creamy easily/or quick enough you can add 2 tablespoons of almond, cashew, hemp milk or water.  Once creamy add the peanut butter to your cream. Serve immediately for soft-serve or if you prefer harder ice cream, place in the freezer for a few hours and then serve.

***Make sure you use a powerful food processor or blender! I use the Ninja Ultimate Blender.

And that’s it for this easy delicious recipe! I have been known to add cocoa powder, fresh pineapple, fresh strawberries and top mine with chopped pecans. It tasted just like a banana split. Ohhhh do I have a treat for you Earthly Bodies today! For me knowing what to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner is easy. It’s snack time that gets me because I want it to be quick/fast food, but I want it to be just as special and yummy as my other meals. Well if you’ve joined me on Periscope this month you witnessed my best friend Lorna and I making one of my favorite snacks Broiled Grapefruit. It was such a great time making that scope! The only thing is periscopes only remain viewable for 24 hours. So just in case you missed it I decided to make this video a permanent part of the Natural Living Tip series. In case you’ve never used Periscope it is a lot like YouTube except it’s live and viewers can interact with the broadcaster by typing questions/comments on the screen, sharing the broadcast with their peeps and tap the screen to display hearts showing the broadcaster love.   • Weight loss: Chia seeds reduce food cravings by preventing some foods that you eat from getting absorbed into your system. Also because these tiny lil seeds absorb 10 times their weight in water they can help your weight loss efforts by making you feel full faster.
  • Hydration: When added to water chia seeds create a gel. This “chia gel” is yet another magical way nature helps provide additional hydration for the body. The texture for me is tricky here…beware. I’ll give you an alternative tip below.
  • Omega-3: Chia seeds provide the richest plant source of Omega-3 which helps prevent or fight inflammation in the body.
  • Diabetes: Because chia seeds slow down how fast our bodies convert carbs into simple sugars they can in fact control blood sugar.

I love adding 1 Tbsp of these seeds in my morning smoothie of course because of the health benefits, but also because the “chia gel” makes my smoothie even thicker which I love! Big things really can come in small packages. These tiny seeds provide incredible benefits for your health.

  • Normalize the menstrual cycle by supporting the second phase; the luteal phase
  • Reduce hot flashes in menopausal women

I have added these as whole seeds in my smoothies, juices and as a topping on salads because of the amazing health benefits, but it doesn’t hurt that I love the nutty flavor and texture they add. I also have to tell you that I have made natural hair gel with these jewels by simply boiling them and straining away the seeds and it is the best!! #NATUREALWAYSWINS

Cayenne pepper is a God-send (pun intended) for many of our health needs. The pepper is also known as capsicum and contains capsaicin which is the substance that makes the pepper spicy. Cayenne has been used in recipes and for therapeutic purposes for centuries all over the world and is used to treat a range of diseases.

Here is a list of 5 reasons out of many why I have incorporated it daily and think you should too.

  • Heart – Cayenne pepper cleans plaque on arteries. Adding it to a cup of water will supply the vital nutrients above to the heart, raise the body’s temperature, improve blood circulation by thinning the blood and remove toxins which will rebuild blood cells.
  • Digestive Issues – Sounds funny, I know, that something spicy can actually heal stomach and intestinal ulcers. It improves digestion by stimulating the peristaltic movement of the intestines.
  • Cholesterol – Cayenne rids the body of LDL (the bad) cholesterol.
  • Hypertensi0n – Regulates the flow of blood literally from head to toe which equalizes blood pressure. It does the same with blood pressure in arteries and veins.
  • Arthritis – Capsaicin (the substance that makes the pepper spicy) works on the sensory nerves relieving pain caused by joint inflammation.

You’ve probably seen this floating around a lot recently and thought that by the looks of it maybe it was some new fancy type of ginger, but weren’t quite sure. Well I’m glad you’re here…let’s talk about turmeric.

Turmeric is a relative of ginger and one of the healthiest ways to add flavor and color to a home-cooked meal. Not to mention it has medicinal properties galore!

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its beautiful yellow color. If you love Indian cuisine as much as I do you are familiar with it. Well it has also been used for thousands of years in India not only as a spice but as a medicinal herb due to its bioactive compounds that give it powerful medicinal properties. It is one of the most researched natural remedies available with several studies validating its healing properties. Hopefully after reading this Natural Living Tip you will pick some up on the way home and begin reaping the benefits too.

The main active ingredient in this spice is curcumin which is known as a powerful antioxidant meaning it targets dangerous free radicals in the body and reduces the damage they are able to cause to cells. Healthy cells equal a healthy body. So in short turmeric offers general wellness benefits as well as targeting specific health conditions. #WINNING!

Cranberry Crush Juice Recipe

In the last week there has been an unusual yet welcomed cold snap in beautiful South Alabama. As I was out and about the crisp air made everything scream FALL IS COMING! In the department store windows the mannequins were dressed in sweaters and cardigans of warm dark colors and every eatery and cafe was advertising pumpkin flavored something. Yep! It’s really coming! One of my favorite seasons. And for me this only means one thing…IT’S CRANBERRY TIME! I looooove these little rubies so! First of all they’re a gorgeous color (what can I say I’m a sucka for pretty food.) Then they have the nerve to be so super good for you with a big punch of Vitamins E, C, K, Manganese and Fiber in such a small package. All of these vitamins and tons of phytonutrients are wonderful in helping to protect the body from harmful free radicals and offer anti-inflammatory and cancer-prevention properties.
